”You went there all by yourself!”
”You’re brave…I could never do that.”
or my favorite…
”You’re not scared to do that all by yourself!”
Notice that they are more like statements, than questions. I feel like when people make those comments- its more for them than for me. My response is always the same- “So you’re telling me that I am not supposed to see and experience the world because I have no one to travel with?!” Eh, wrong! I honestly prefer to to travel alone by choice. Granted there are potential mishaps that can while traveling alone, just like they can while traveling with someone.
One travels more usefully when alone, because he reflects more. – Thomas Jefferson
Reason #1- Get to know the most important person in your world!
I have come to understand that there are some people who are not comfortable with being alone. No going out to eat, to the movies, let alone travel. I enjoy that time alone. It gives me time to think. Time to be myself. Traveling solo, gives me time to get to know me. Push buttons, test limits. I am able to overcome fears, build confidence. It helps me to learn new qualities and explore old ones.
Reason #2- Trip planning revolves around you and only you!
I know that sounds selfish, but planning a trip with someone can be stressful. Nothings more stressful than planning a trip with someone, especially if that person is indecisive or closed-minded. I feel like you really get to know them. What they will and will not do. Their fears, highs and lows. When traveling by yourself, the only person you have to worry about is yourself. No last minute decisions. Indecisiveness. Hangs ups at a minimum. I like that I can get up and go when I feel. Go wherever I like, for as long as I like, doing whatever I like.
Reason #3- Do all of the things you wish to do!
Nothing urks me more than limiting a trip because of what my travel companion will or wont do. Their hesitation to remove the tourist label and immerse themselves in into the culture. When traveling alone, you can do just that. You can be a tourist on one trip and a local the next. Exploring all popular destinations and attractions, staying in popular national hotel chains and eating in tourist filled restaurants. Or, you can explore off the beaten path destinations, attractions, hotels and restaurants unique to the culture.
Reason #4- To budget or not to budget- that is the question!
The cost can become the main reason that many people decide not to travel much, if not at all. When traveling with someone, you have to take into account their budget, as well as yours. The trip can be affected if they cannot to do certain things. I love that when traveling alone, I am only concerned with my own budget. Important decisions on a trip full of free things and attractions or splurging on unique experiences.
Reason #5- New friends… why not!
When traveling alone, you get to meet new people and potentially new friends. Somethings you are less likely to do with a travel companion or group. I love going new places and meeting cool people that provide you recommendations to explore whatever destination like a true local. It takes a lot of confidence to be able strike up a conversation with a random stranger.
I recommend that you travel solo at lease once in your life. Granted there are concerns as with any travel, but there are pros that outweigh the cons.
